💔 41 months of waiting: why we are launching a Zeffy campaign
Today, we are taking a new step forward.
For months, we have been denouncing the inhumane delays in family reunification in Quebec: an average wait of 41 months, compared to only 13 months elsewhere in Canada.
Today, we are taking a new step forward. To ensure that the voices of separated families are heard everywhere, we are launching a crowdfunding campaign via Zeffy.
📊 Where are we now?
The current projection, based on data from 6 September, shows that at the current rate we will reach approximately 6,455 signatures by 1 October. Our official target is 10,000 signatures.
➡️ This means we will be short of nearly 3,500 signatures — a gap we can bridge if we invest now in targeted outreach campaigns.
🔒 The context: obstacles and limitations
For the past two weeks, our team has been working hard to mobilise support. However, several channels are now closed to us:
The MaCommunauté.ca website, which lists non-profit organisations, prohibits the use of its forms for petitions or political campaigns. Any attempt to do so is automatically blocked.
After intense efforts on social media and through direct contacts, we have reached the limits of volunteer mobilisation.
As one member wrote: ‘The sweat of our brows is no longer enough.’
We therefore had to find a new and quick solution.
🎯 Why a Zeffy campaign?
Because we have three weeks left to:
reach thousands of new people,
break out of our usual circles,
spread awareness of the petition beyond the families directly affected.
👉 We are already starting with our small budget: keep an eye on our social media channels to see our first advertisements, which will feature volunteers and members of Québec Réunifié who are directly affected by these delays.
💡 How will your donation be used?
Each $500 will fund a complete media campaign:
📣 French-language press
📰 English-language press
💻 Targeted social media
Together, we can turn £2,000 into 10,000 signatures.
🔔 Policy update: reshuffle and prorogation — what impact will this have on family reunification?
The Legault government is in turmoil: resignations, internal pressure and falling poll numbers. Two major events will take place in the coming weeks:
The cabinet reshuffle (mid-September)
François Legault will be reshuffling the deck in his Cabinet.
For family reunification, this means a new political configuration, with possibly a different Minister of Immigration.
This is a key moment to apply pressure: new ministers seek to make their mark and show that they are listening to the public.
The prorogation of the National Assembly (until 30 September)
In concrete terms, this ‘wipes the slate clean’: all bills currently before the Assembly are dead on the order paper.
The government must therefore rewrite its opening speech and present a roadmap for the remainder of its term.
This is an opportunity to demand that family reunification be included among the priorities set out by the Prime Minister.
📌 In summary:
The reshuffle opens up the possibility of new interlocutors.
The prorogation forces the government to define its priorities: it is up to us to ensure that family reunification is included.
🌟 Why act now?
Because every signature counts. Because every donation multiplies our reach. Because Quebec's political history is being written right now: reshuffles, prorogations, consultations on immigration.
Now is the time to make families' voices heard.
